China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index rose to 49.8 in August 2026. Production (50.4), new orders (50.6) and export orders (50.1) were just above the expansion line. For importers, the headline is context, not a lead-time forecast for a particular supplier.

Below 50, but not one story

The headline remains just below 50 while orders and production improve. Some plants can therefore be busy even when national sentiment is soft.

Export orders are closer to your risk

The export-order component is a better conversation starter than a national headline. Ask about backlog, shifts and capacity reserved for your SKU.

Reconcile PMI with evidence

Compare the signal with confirmed start, material stock, QC date and gate-in. Contradictions are a reason to deepen supplier checks.

The PMI is just below 50, but a supplier reports full capacity because of one large order. Instead of moving the date blindly, the importer checks open orders, material cover and the production plan. The macro signal prompts a targeted question; the line-level evidence drives the decision.

Please share open orders, available capacity, material cover and confirmed dates for our SKU. Please explain price changes by material, energy, labour or freight share. Please report bottlenecks or shift changes before the agreed cargo-ready date.

Release criteria for the file

A release is defensible only when four questions can be answered from the same record: What exactly was checked? Which SKU, batch, route or period does the statement cover? Which primary source or supplier document supports it? Who assessed the deviation and when is it reviewed again? Put those answers in the inspection report instead of marking a line only “passed”. Link the file to the order, sample and receipt. If evidence is missing, give the line an “open” status with an owner and due date. This keeps later corrections traceable and lets procurement distinguish evidence from assumptions.

Follow-up and recheck

Approval is not the end of the check. Set a trigger for the next review: a new batch, material or process change, an authority notice, a price or lead-time deviation, or the scheduled review date. A short monthly reconciliation of orders, supplier data and received goods catches drift earlier than an annual catch-up. When a deviation appears, hold the affected batch, obtain a written supplier response and reopen approval only after a documented corrective record.
